Terms of Service

Research support, with professional judgment intact

In brief

Vattel is a source-grounded research tool. It assists qualified users; it does not replace review of the full authority, the record or the lawyer responsible for the matter.

01 Agreement and provider

These Terms govern access to Vattel, provided by Sequester AG, Baarerstrasse 10, 6300 Zug, Switzerland (CHE-358.088.054). By using the service, you agree to these Terms. If you use it for an organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to bind that organisation.

An enterprise agreement, order form, data-processing agreement or written pilot agreement prevails over these Terms where it expressly addresses the same subject.

02 The service

Vattel retrieves legislation, court decisions and other legal material, and may generate research summaries, analyses and citations. Features, indexed sources and access levels may change as the service develops.

The service may be offered as an invitation-only preview. Sequester may impose reasonable limits, change or discontinue preview features, or suspend access for security, legal or operational reasons.

03 No legal advice

Vattel provides research assistance, not legal advice, legal representation or a substitute for a qualified professional. Use does not create a lawyer-client, fiduciary or similar professional relationship with Sequester AG.

Outputs may be incomplete, outdated or wrong. You must inspect the cited passage and the full official source, confirm that the law is current and applicable, consider contrary authority and procedural posture, and exercise independent professional judgment before relying on an output or sharing it with a client, court, authority or third party.

04 Your content and confidentiality

You retain your rights in questions, matter facts and other content you submit. You grant Sequester only the limited right needed to process that content, provide and secure the service, and comply with law. Sequester does not acquire ownership of your matter content.

You must have the necessary rights and authority to submit content. You are responsible for professional-secrecy, confidentiality, data-protection and client-consent obligations, and for using the deployment approved by your organisation. Do not enter confidential matter facts unless your organisation has approved this deployment.

05 Outputs and official sources

Subject to these Terms and third-party rights, you may use, edit and incorporate outputs into your work. Because similar input can produce similar output and legal authorities are public, outputs may not be unique and Sequester does not promise that an output is protectable by intellectual-property law.

Official publications remain authoritative. Source links, extracts and metadata may originate from public authorities or other identified publishers and remain subject to their applicable terms and rights.

06 Acceptable use

You may not use the service unlawfully; submit content you are not authorised to process; interfere with security or operation; bypass access controls or usage limits; introduce malicious code; misrepresent machine output as independently verified work; or use automated means to extract the service, its prompts or non-public indexes except as expressly authorised in writing.

You must keep access credentials secure and notify Sequester promptly of suspected unauthorised use.

07 Sequester rights

Sequester and its licensors retain all rights in the service, software, design, prompts, retrieval and verification methods, compilation of indexes, trademarks and documentation. No rights are granted except the limited right to use the service under these Terms.

If you provide feedback, Sequester may use it without restriction or obligation, provided the feedback does not include confidential matter content.

08 Availability and warranties

We aim to operate the service with professional care, but previews and online services may be interrupted and are provided on an “as available” basis. To the extent permitted by law, Sequester disclaims implied warranties, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement.

Nothing in these Terms excludes a warranty or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded.

09 Liability

To the extent permitted by law, Sequester is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profit, lost opportunity, or loss caused by reliance on an output without the professional verification required by these Terms.

For paid service, Sequester’s aggregate liability arising from the service is limited to the fees paid for it during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. For a free preview, the aggregate limit is CHF 100. These limitations do not apply to wilful misconduct, gross negligence, death or personal injury, or liability that mandatory law does not permit us to limit.

10 Suspension and termination

You may stop using the service at any time. Sequester may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms, create a security or legal risk, or when a preview or customer agreement ends. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination remain effective, including intellectual-property, disclaimer, liability and dispute provisions.

11 Governing law and courts

These Terms are governed by the substantive laws of Switzerland, excluding conflict-of-law rules and the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.

Subject to any mandatory forum, the courts of Zug, Switzerland have exclusive jurisdiction. Mandatory consumer protections and forums remain unaffected where they apply.

12 Changes and contact

We may update these Terms for legal, security or service changes. The effective date identifies the current version. Material changes will be communicated where required; continued use after they take effect constitutes acceptance.

Questions about these Terms may be sent to [email protected].
